Deaths worldwide
Till 2013 – New TB cases seen annually were about 5.7 million.
In 2014 – this same figure rose to more than 6 million.
There are 1.96 million new cases of TB annually in India. In these, nearly 0.8 million are the infectious cases; this incidence is less in South India and more in North India. And it is more in the urban areas and also more common in males than females.
TB deaths being compared to HIV deaths!
In 2014, Worldwide, Among HIV-positive and HIV- negative, nearly 90% of all TB deaths and 80% of TB deaths among HIV-negative people happened in the African and South-East Asia Regions.
In India-out of a population of 1,295,292,000, TB deaths were 220,000 and due to HIV positive it was 31,000-in 2014.
Co-infection with HIV increases risk of TB disease by 5 to 6 times. There are nearly 2.31 million people with HIV and approximately 1 million who are co-infected with HIV and TB.
It is estimated that about 5 per cent of all TB patients are HIV positive.
Globally, it was found that there are 7.1 million new TB cases in people without HIV/AIDS and resulted in 1.3 million deaths.
How many positive cases are in India?
Indian experts say there are nearly 3.8 million bacteriologically positive cases and the WHO estimate of 2007 is that there are 3.3 million TB cases.
The report also says that that nearly 40 per cent of the Indian population is affected with the tuberculosis bacteria and out of this 10 per cent will probably develop the TB disease in their lifetime.
